Da gegebene Machtverhältnisse immer auch symbolischer Macht bedürfen, um sich aufrechtzuerhalten, sind sie angewiesen auf die Verbreitung herrschaftsstabilisierender Bilder, Texte, Filme und Geschichten. Genauso kann Kunst aber auch zur Destabilisierung von Herrschaftsverhältnissen beitragen, zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Kolonialität von Macht, Wissen und Sein. In Machtschaffend gehen Theater-, Film-, Kunst- und Literaturschaffende der Frage nach, von wem welche Kunst verstanden werden will und mit welchen künstlerischen Mitteln sich hegemoniale Perspektiven im Theater, im Film, in der Literatur irritieren lassen. Den Essays ist jeweils ein kurzes Zitat bedeutender Vordenker*innen wie Angela Davis, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak oder James Baldwin vorangestellt, von dem sich die Autor*innen in ihrem Nachdenken über die Beziehung von Kulturproduktionen und Herrschaftsverhältnissen haben inspirieren lassen.

Im Zuge der Black Lives Matter-Bewegung hat die Forderung nach Abrüstung der Polizei und Abschaffung repressiver Strafrechtssysteme, die – insbesondere in den USA, aber auch weltweit – zutiefst sexistisch, rassistisch und klassistisch geprägt sind, enormen Auftrieb erhalten. Denn die Leidtragenden einer Praxis des staatlichen Polizierens und Wegsperrens sind vor allem Schwarze und Frauen of Color.

Allerdings ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Abolitionismus kompliziert, da Teile der Frauenbewegung Strafverschärfungen und ein entschiedeneres staatliches Vorgehen gegenüber Tätern sexualisierter Gewalt verlangen. Ein radikaler Feminismus jedoch, so intervenieren die Autorinnen, müsse anerkennen, dass der Versuch, Gewalt durch Gewalt zu stoppen, diese am Ende nur verschärft.

Seit den 1970er-Jahren nehmen Schwarze Befreiungsbewegungen im mehrheitlich Schwarzen Mississippi den Wandel selbst in die Hand. Der tiefe Süden soll zum Zentrum ihrer Unabhängigkeit werden – »Free the Land!«. In den 2010er-Jahren gelingt mit der Wahl von Chokwe Lumumba zum Bürgermeister in der Hauptstadt Jackson ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung einer Umsetzung der Vision bestehend aus Versammlungsdemokratie, solidarischer Ökonomie und einem Ende der rassistischen Ungleichheit. Lumumba stirbt 2014 überraschend, aber sein Sohn Antar und die Cooperation Jackson schreiten weiter fragend voran.

The Lianas that Strangled the Serpent is a trilingual novel set in the 1930s that details the struggle against fascism within the German community in Mexico City. It does so through the experience of Otto, an anarchist worker and second generation immigrant. His political deception of the post-revolutionary period as well as his personal inclinations towards cynicism will be temporarily dropped when facing the need to confront the immediate expansion of fascism in Mexico and in Europe. It is a story that speaks of antifascism and of international solidarity, a snapshot of a historical period full of global changes, focusing on the impact they left on the lives of normal people.

Beasts of Burden was first published in October 1999. The aim of the anonymous pamphlet was to initiate a debate between animal liberationists and revolutionaries – anarchists and communists (the author uses the term ‘communist’ repeatedly and means communism in its original sense: a stateless and classless society where people live together and ‘the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all’. We are reissuing it with a new introduction.

These short introductions delve into the anarchist canon to recover some of the distinctive ideas that historical anarchists advanced to address problems relevant to their circumstances. Although these contexts were special, many of the issues the anarchists wrestled with still plague our lives. Anarchists developed a body of writing about power, domination, injustice and exploitation, education, prisons and a lot more besides. Honing in on different facets of the anarchist canon is not just an interesting archaeological exercise.

Proudhon is famous for two reasons. First, he’s the author of What is Property? the book containing the immortal phrase “property is theft!” Second, he has emerged as the ‘first’ anarchist. This accolade is explained in part by his provocative reclamation of ‘anarchy’. Until Proudhon published his critique of property in 1840 the term had only been applied pejoratively. In the other part, it comes from his encounter with Marx. In 1846 Proudhon rebuffed Marx’s tentative advances and hinted that he found his proposals dogmatic. Malatesta is the direct link between the demise of the First International in 1871 and the struggle against European fascism that started some forty years later. After the ruckus between Marx and Bakunin catalysed the separate development of revolutionary socialist organisations, he joined both the anarchist Federalist International and its Italian section. Spending long stretches of time in exile, dodging arrest and escaping jail, he lived much of his life like the great white shark, permanently on the move.
